Playcrafters’ fall production of the marital farce Cheaters was a huge artistic success and was one of the most well attended non-musicals in Playcrafters’ history. Director Jim Parise along with producers Kathy Loizides and Des Burke and stage manager John Hannon guided the cast into giving performances that garnered rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. George Loizides’ unfortunate injury on November 15 made it necessary for us to cancel the final performance, a first in Playcrafters’ 43 year history. We are pleased to announce that George is up and around, although he won’t be jumping over couches or crawling under tables in the foreseeable future. Kudos to cast members Amelia Chiaramonte, Jim Parise (hat number 2), George Loizides, Jane Maushay, Kim Esp and Ken Krummenacker. Thanks to an excellent crew, the production values were up to Playcrafters’ highest standards.

Following the trend that Playcrafters started last fall, we would like to continue visiting other local theaters in the new year. Apropos of this, we have planned theater dates for February and March. On February 15 we will be heading to the Airport Playhouse in Bohemia for their 2:30 matinee of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods. The Claire Rose Theater on the St. Joseph’s College campus is our goal on March 14 for a rousing production of the Stephen Schwarz musical Godspell. Any members wishing to join us should contact us either by telephone (748-7863) or e-mail at our new e-mail address, [email protected].

The Board is happy to announce that plans for the spring show are in full swing. We will be reversing our usual tradition of spring musical and fall drama/comedy by producing AR Gurney’s comedy Sylvia this spring. It’s the story of a man in mid-life crisis, who brings home a stray dog (Sylvia) that just happens to be able to talk. This hilarious comedy was produced Off Broadway about 10 years ago and catapulted Sarah Jessica Parker into almost instant stardom portraying the irrascible canine. Playcrafters is pleased to welcome Bob Kaplan on board as director. Auditions will be held on February 23 and 24, 7:30 pm at the Bellport Middle School. As usual we encourage all interested members to audition and/or help out on our backstage production staff. Check our website for further details. We still need a producer at the helm. If anyone is interested please contact us soon.

Board members Des Burke, Ted Fleissgarten and Brian Hannon completed their terms in 2003. We wish to thank them for their hard work and devoted service to Playcrafters. A Nominating Committee was assembled which consisted of Board Directors Kathy Loizides and Ted Fleissgarten along with members Michael Mullaney, Sharon Walker and Bill Love. The committee met in November and selected Geri D’Amico, Jane Love and Al Rand to run for the vacant positions. The election will take place at the annual meeting which will be held at the Brown Building on January 25, 2004 at 3PM. All members are welcome. There will be entertainment and a raffle basket.

As we kick off our 2004 agenda please join or renew your membership soon. Thank You.
