Our Fall Show. . .

Evening of Comedy III: 2010 – LOL

Just when you thought it was safe to return to the theatre.  Back by popular demand, Playcrafters presents “An Evening of Comedy III” brought to you by the team of “Mr. D” (directed by George Loizides), and “Mr. P” (produced by John Hannon).  This will be a laugh-filled evening consisting of comedy sketches by various authors including David Ives and Tom Stoppard, along with fast paced one (and two) liners. Our zany cast includes: Lara Bowen, Flo Federman, Jason Glass, Jill Linden, Dan Love, Peter Morrison, William Palladino, Claire Parrella-Curran and our Musical Emcee, Sean Burke.    We will be turning the Christ Episcopal Church Hall into a “Comedy Shop” on November 5, 6, 12, & 13 at 8:00 pm.  Seating will be “Cabaret Style” (tables and chairs) and will be limited so we urge you to call for reservations at (631) 758-7863. Also visit our website at www.Bellport-Playcrafters.com.

Our Spring Show. . . Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling

The play, part drama, part comedy, was a critical and popular success Off-Broadway at New York’s WPA Theatre before it was made into a hit movie with an all-star cast.  The story unfolds in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious repartee, the play moves toward tragedy in the second act when the spunky Shelby (who is diabetic) risks pregnancy and endangers  her life. The sudden appreciation of their mortality reveals the underlying strength—and love—of the characters, and makes them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company.

Playcrafters’ production of this much-loved play will be directed by our own Flo Federman.  Auditions for the all female cast of six will be held December 13 and 14 (location to be announced – check the website), with four performances in the new Bellport Middle School Auditorium on March 4, 5, 11, and 12 in 2011.

Changes in Dues

In keeping with the rising costs of just about everything, Playcrafters is raising its membership rates a bit.  The following rates will go into effect on January 1, 2011:

Note that, as these dues oblige members only once a year, no payment is required until membership renewal in 2011.

 50th Anniversary Enjoyed by All

On Sunday, September 12th, Playcrafters celebrated a monumental event - 50 years as a community theater group. Over 60 people gathered at the Patchogue Shores Community Center in East Patchogue to mingle and reminisce over past productions and good times.  Bill Reynolds, one of our original founders, was present, as well as long time members Ellie Mahoney and Joe Nardi. Traveling the farthest, Cheryl and Gary Sica came from North Carolina to be with us. Joe Skelly made our history come alive with a narrated slide show down memory lane. Bellport Mayor David Pate presented president John Hannon with a proclamation commemorating our achievement. Highlighting the event were the beautiful displays of posters, pictures and albums put together by our archivist, Michele DePalo. A big thank you goes out to all those who helped make our anniversary party such a wonderful success.  Photos can be seen on our social activities section of the website.

 “Tickets” Initiative

With this newsletter, there are enclosed four ticket “coupons” to Playcrafters Fall production of “Evening of Comedy III”.  We had such success with using these coupons at the Spring 2010 show of “Blithe Spirit” that we wanted to continue this initiative.

Each coupon will allow a $2.00 discount on the “Adult” admission price of $18.00 only (not senior or student). As a member, please bring a coupon with you to any of the four shows, pay the discounted “Adult” admission price, sit and enjoy a top quality theatrical experience, right in your own neighborhood. The other three passes are for you to share with family, friends, and community, encouraging as many as possible to attend. Thanks for your continued support.

(Please note, while there is a discount on these passes, these are not complimentary tickets. They must be paid for at the door. They can be used for any one of the four performances.)
