Our New Theater Space

As reported at Playcrafters’ Annual Meeting 2012, we are entertaining a proposal from the Boys and Girls Club of Bellport that we could use the auditorium in their new facility on Atlantic Avenue for our performances.  The Boys and Girls Club would expect Playcrafters to make substantial contributions to the development of their auditorium into a suitable theatrical venue.  This topic was the subject of a spirited debate with a number of issues raised at the annual meeting, and has continued to receive careful consideration from the Board since then.

A number of Playcrafters toured the new building recently, to examine the facility firsthand, and the group photo in hard hats has been posted on the Playcrafters website.  Reactions to the auditorium space were entirely positive, although it is still in the early stages of construction.  Members of the board are working with directors at the Boys and Girls Club to develop a Memorandum of Understanding that would establish a long-term basis for this joint undertaking by our two groups.  We are also trying to develop a detailed plan for the improvements to the auditorium that would equip it suitably for all its anticipated uses.  Finally, we have reached out to staff at the Gateway Playhouse to review our plans in this regard, and they have eagerly offered to cooperate with us in this effort.

We look forward to continued progress in this exciting venture, and hope to be able to announce further developments within the next few months, as well as a 2012-2013 season making use of the new facility.

The Night of the Iguana

Playcrafters presented Tennessee Williams classic The Night of the Iguana at the Bellport Community Center on January 20, 21, 27, and 28, 2012 to critical and popular acclaim.  This powerful drama, ably directed by George Loizides, starred Phil Eberhardt, Bob Kaplan, Kathryn Lerner, Jane Maushay, Claire Parrella-Curran, Brian Raber, Vincent Rasulo, and Mary-Alyce Vienneau.

Reviews in the Advance and Newsday were favorable, noting Playcrafters’ intrepid handling of such challenging material and commenting favorably on the “splendidly dilapidated set.”

Congratulations are extended to all involved - director, cast, producers, designers and crew alike.  One especially thoughtful member of the cast gifted those involved with small memento rubber iguanas (complete with spectacularly long tails), which all will cherish for a long time.
